Udinese celebrate anniversary
Udinese are celebrating the 122nd anniversary of the Serie A club’s foundation, making them one of the oldest in Italy.
The Friulani were founded on November 30, 1896 as the Società Udinese di Ginnastica e Scherma – the Udinese gymnastics and fencing club.
They were the winners of the first ever Italian national football tournament held in Treviso in 1897.
It was registered purely as a football club on July 5, 1911 and reached the Coppa Italia Final in 1992, losing 1-0 to Vado.
There aren’t many trophies on the mantelpiece, but Udinese won the Mitropa Cup in 1979-80 and the Intertoto Cup in 2000.
They have been stably in Serie A since 1995-96.
The club released a video marking the anniversary, scrolling through the many jerseys worn over the decades, with the tagline: “122 years passed by in one breath.”
