Monchi: Roma 'below expectations'

Monchi admits Roma are ‘performing below expectations’ but insists ‘everything’s fine and I’m not going anywhere.’

Monchi has joined Coach Eusebio Di Francesco in coming under scrutiny, given Roma’s domestic struggles this season with a squad built by the former Sevilla sporting director.

Nonetheless, he told Cadena SER in his native Spain: “Roma are an ambitious team and we know we’ll qualify for the Champions League knockouts with one point.

“We’ll try to win, knowing it’ll be very difficult. Our primary objective, once the group was drawn, was to reach the last 16.

“Now that we have the chance, knowing that in this competition, the small details make the difference, I’m not satisfied.

“I want us to be ambitious and aim to win the group. We’re a very inconsistent team. We haven’t found continuity in the League and suffered some unexpected defeats like the ones to Bologna and SPAL, so we’re performing below expectations.

“We’re seventh and we have some important points to recover. As for Schick, we still have high hopes and expectations for him.

“However, I haven’t talked to anyone from Madrid about Dzeko. It’s all speculation. It’s also  normal to have so many injuries when there are so many matches close together. it also happens to Real Madrid and Barcelona.

“It’s very good to see Sevilla doing well. I often talk to Joaquin Caparros [their sporting director].

“We have a good relationship and built a lot together, but everything’s fine at Roma and I’m not going anywhere.”
