Kolarov: ‘Roma will step up’

Aleksandar Kolarov says Roma are “aware we’re not going through a good period” but “men step up, we have them and they’ll step up”.

The Giallorossi lost to Udinese at the weekend, leaving them 18 points behind leaders Juventus and four away from a Champions League place.

Tomorrow they face Real Madrid in the Champions League, and Kolarov joined Coach Eusebio Di Francesco in the pre-match Press conference.

“The team is struggling in the league, but I’m sure that in the end we’ll finish in the top four,” the Serbian predicted.

“The Champions League is a special competition which I approach in the same way as other matches.

“I’ve never lacked the will to win and no-one plays to lose. Udinese shot at goal once and scored, that’s just how matches are going.

“We’re aware that we’re not going through a good period, but in the end men step up. We have them, and they’ll step up.

“We need to score goals to win, Udinese, Spal, Chievo, Bologna… even with eight players we have to win. That’s what I think football is about.

“As men we have to win tomorrow. That’s the road and the way to think.

“In Madrid, Roma didn’t live up to what Roma have shown ourselves to be in the Champions League. We need to make it clear from the first minute that Real are the away team.”

Daniele De Rossi, Kostas Manolas and Lorenzo Pellegrini are all out for tomorrow’s game…

“They [Real Madrid] have won the Champions League for three seasons in row, and even if we were all available it’d be a difficult game for us.”

Both men were asked if there is anything they can promise to the fans.

“I don’t promise anything to anyone,” Kolarov replied.

“They support us home and away, I just need to promise myself that I’ll give my all.

“A fan needs to understand that he doesn’t understand that much about football, I’d never permit myself to comment on what [Serbian tennis star Novak] Djokovic does, far less advise him on tactics.

“There’s a lot of talk, we waste our breath without saying anything. I like to watch tennis or basketball, but I don’t know anything about them.”
