Giampaolo: 'Samp lost confidence'
Marco Giampaolo concedes Sampdoria “lost confidence” in the 1-1 draw with Genoa. “Our midfield was more set up to play with quality.”
The Blucerchiati had started strong, leading through a Fabio Quagliarella header, but after Krzysztof Piatek’s penalty, they had to thank Emil Audero for a series of decisive saves.
“The Derby is a different game to all the others and there are emotions you only experience when you walk out into the stadium, so any evaluation of a performance must take that into account,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.
“We had started well, but once they equalised, we lost a bit of confidence and the match became scruffier. Genoa created several chances in those circumstances and our midfield was more set up to play with quality than pace.
“Despite that, we always stayed afloat and kept Genoa at bay. I didn’t mind the performance, as we are still convalescing after a run of defeats, so it was a step forward.
“It’s tough when you’re coming off three defeats and have to play a Derby. You can’t afford a mistake, because even the slightest error can make a big difference. Unfortunately, Edgar Barreto and Karol Linetty were unavailable, as they’d be more suited to this kind of gritty encounter.”
