Celebrities defend ‘Cosby Show’ star Geoffrey Owens, shamed for having a day job
Over the weekend, a big deal was made about an actor having a job bagging groceries at a supermarket.
That actor was The Cosby Show’s Geoffrey Owens, who was featured in a so-called story by the Daily Mail and Fox News for doing what many of us do in order to survive.
He was snapped by a passer-by at a New Jersey Trader Joe’s, and the photo was published in what seemed a rather spiteful attempt to shame a person doing an honest day’s work — even if they might be famous.
Owens is still acting, appearing recently in Elementary and Lucifer, his IMDb CV filled with various roles over the years. But it goes without saying that work in the entertainment industry is sporadic, and other jobs are simply necessary to get by.
It’s a reality that’s been echoed by other celebrities and actors, who wrote about their other jobs outside of acting on Twitter.
Again, why is this news? When I worked on “Thirtysomething” I was also summarizing depositions to pay my rent. Why are you trying to humiliate this honorable, hardworking actor? Shame on you! #geoffreyowens – many great blessings are coming your way! https://t.co/8tgvW3iixr

Those of us who have been in this industry awhile know the determination it takes, through good times and bad. We’ve all been there.
I got nothin’ but love for you, #GeoffreyOwens. An honest day’s pay for an honest day’s work. https://t.co/UUQg6KHdQL

In 2008, I left a job at KTTV voluntarily. Then the economy crashed & I couldn’t find steady work. I struggled. At one point I called my agent & told her I was going to apply at Target. I wasn’t ashamed. I needed to work. I had bills. And an honest days work is just that, honest.

I’ve worked as a cleaning person in a video store, washed dishes, bussed tables, worked in a law office, catered, waitered and more. Work is work, always be prepared to do it. Geoffrey Owens is a testimony to the dignity of work and to frame it as anything else is ignorant. https://t.co/IyL2i6OvwY

I had been a working actor for years. Jobs stopped, as they do. I worked in retail. At a flower shop. I passed out flyers. It’s about the work. Work gives you pride and purpose. Your visibility as an actor never goes away. But the money sure does. #geoffreyowens pic.twitter.com/BBzZaBrGBx

And as longtime actor James Woods notes, Owens is still bringing in that money. Work is work.
